To ensure an optimal lighting system in a hinge-back tortoise terrarium, it's important to not only choose the right light sources but also to pay attention to the correct distances of the lighting from the terrarium floor. This is crucial to avoid overheating or undercooling and to ensure that the temperature in the tortoises' habitat remains ideal. The recommended distances vary depending on the type and brand of lighting and are usually indicated on the packaging of the lamps. However, to be on the safe side, a direct measurement of the temperature in the terrarium is absolutely necessary.
For this temperature measurement, I recommend using an infrared thermometer. This tool allows for quick, accurate, and contactless measurement of surface temperature at various points in the terrarium. It is the best, fastest, and easiest method to ensure that the heat distribution throughout the living space of your hinge-back tortoises is even and appropriate. Such a thermometer is particularly useful for monitoring the temperature under HID lamps such as 'Lucky Reptile Bright Sun Desert', 'Reptiles Expert', and 'X-Reptile' (70-100 Watt) as well as in areas with LED lighting. This way, you can actively avoid hotspots and ensure that your tortoises have access to areas with varying temperatures, which is crucial for their health and well-being.
The integration of LED lighting to increase the Lux value and to promote plant growth ideally complements the lighting system. Plants play an important role in the terrarium by contributing to air purification, providing hiding spots, and regulating humidity. The right lighting not only supports the growth of these plants but also enhances the aesthetic appearance of the terrarium and creates a pleasant environment for the animals.
Moreover, it's important to regularly check and adjust the lighting. To accurately monitor UV radiation and ensure that my tortoises always receive the right amount of UVB light, I use a 'Solarmeter® 6.5'. This measuring device, costing between approximately 250 and 300 Euros, allows me to precisely measure and adjust the UVB radiation in the terrarium to ensure optimal conditions for the animals. To maintain a constant and effective UV supply, I regularly replace the lamps at the beginning of October or November. Thus, the lamps are effectively in use for about 10 months of the year. Especially in the summer months, to save some electricity, during this time the animals are moved to an outdoor enclosure, or in my case to a cold frame, where they are exposed to natural sunlight; during this time, the lighting is turned off.
In summary, the combination of carefully selected HID and LED lamps, paying attention to the recommended distances to the terrarium floor, and regular temperature monitoring with an infrared thermometer forms the basis for a healthy and stimulating living environment for hinge-back tortoises. These measures ensure that your tortoises not only stay healthy but also lead an active and satisfied life in their artificially created environment.
