African Land Turtles (Non-Tropical)
The Spaltenschildkröte is characterized by its flexible shell, which has openings between the bone plates, making it light and allowing it to hide in rock crevices. Typically brown with striking yellow spots, its softer shell provides less protection, leading it to often seek refuge in crevices where it can inflate itself when threatened. Found in Tanzania and Kenya, they prefer rocky thornbush savannas and are mainly active in the mornings and evenings for foraging. Their breeding primarily occurs in the early months of the year, though under human care, they can reproduce year-round. Eggs are laid in the summer, with the young hatching after several months.

A spectacular fossil discovery in southern Germany has rocked the scientific community: Pappochelys, also known as the "grandfather of turtles," offers fascinating insights into the evolution of these unique reptiles. The approximately 240-million-year-old remains reveal that turtles once looked very different, and their development is a captivating story that is now being rewritten. Pappochelys might be the key to understanding the origin of the turtle's distinctive shell, potentially ending a long-standing debate in paleontology.

Tropical Land Turtles
The Radiated Tortoise, scientifically known as Astrochelys radiata, is a reptile species found only in the dry forests and grasslands of Madagascar. Its shell is distinctive, marked by radiating yellow lines, which sets it apart from other tortoise species. These medium-sized tortoises can grow up to 40 centimeters in length and are known for their peaceful and diurnal behavior. Radiated Tortoises are important contributors to their ecosystem as they primarily eat plants and fruits.
