As an pancake tortoise keeper living on the third floor without an elevator, I am familiar with the challenges of substrate changes. Carrying heavy materials like sand-clay mixtures has consistently taken a toll on my back. In search of a lighter alternative, I came across this substrate and was pleasantly surprised.
Positives
The lightweight nature of this substrate makes transportation and handling significantly easier, relieving the strain on my back. One standout feature is the honest product description provided by the manufacturer. Unlike many other substrate brands, this one offers clear and transparent guidance on usage.
The manufacturer advises regular moistening of the substrate depending on the type of tortoise and provides helpful tips on adjusting the substrate’s structure by mixing it with garden soil, stones, or other materials. They also highlight the importance of gently pressing down the substrate, especially for hatchlings and young tortoises. Moreover, the substrate can be repurposed as a soil enhancer in the garden or enclosure, which is both practical and eco-friendly.
Negatives
The substrate's consistency is very soft, perhaps too soft for my pancake tortoises, which typically prefer firmer soils. Additionally, it did not meet my expectations of resembling molehill soil. If this substrate proves unsuitable over time, I may need to revert to the reliable but heavier sand-clay mixture, despite its challenges.
Conclusion
Despite a few drawbacks, this substrate has impressed me, particularly with its honest product description and flexible application options. It stands out as one of the best products currently available, especially for those looking for a lightweight and back-friendly solution. Its adaptability allows it to be tailored to specific needs, making it a versatile choice. I plan to monitor the long-term results and may consider mixing it with Desert Stone’s black substrate for a firmer consistency in the future. However, if necessary, returning to the trusted sand-clay mixture remains an option.
